SALC has hosted a range of study groups organized by the center\u2019s teaching assistants (TAs) and technical staff. These events give students the chance to find out more about the staff’s research interests, improve their academic English, and make friends. Below is a summary of some of the study groups that have taken place inside the center. You can find out about future events in the news section of the SALC website.<\/p>\n

SALC Philosophy Caf\u00e9 : Existentialism YOUNG DANIEL(SALC Staff)<\/p>\n

SALC Staff YOUNG DANIEL organises the event on 15 June 2022. The objective of this event is to promote philosophy in a non-academic way. During the session, the speaker introduced some basic concepts of philosophy and explained how they matter to all of us. The speaker started the session *with the question of the meaning of life*. The speaker went on to explain some concepts from the classic philosophical workBeyond the Good and Evil , written by the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche The total number of participants was 14 students. After the lecture, there was a small Q&A session with the students.<\/p>\n

Rainbow Studies – Panda<\/strong><\/p>\n

SALC teaching assistant and Kyushu University graduate student Panda ran a study group titled “Rainbow Studies.” During the sessions, students discussed stereotypes and misconceptions about sexuality.<\/p>\n

The #MeToo Movement and Women in Chinese History – Xiaoyang<\/strong><\/p>\n

SALC teaching assistant and Kyushu University graduate student Xiaoyang organized a study group about the #MeToo movement and women in Chinese history.<\/p>\n

Language in the Brain – Danny<\/strong><\/p>\n

SALC teaching assistant and Kyushu University graduate student Danny lead a study group about neurolinguistics. This session covered the very basics of language processing in the brain. Participants learned how different parts of the brain work together to use language. The discussion also went over some of the physical changes that take place in the brain as people learn a new language.<\/p>\n

How to Watch Movies – Se\u00e1n<\/strong><\/p>\n

SALC teaching staff Se\u00e1n led a study group about film studies. In this study group, students learned more about how movie scenes are created.<\/p>\n

How do Countries Escape Poverty? – Augusto<\/strong><\/p>\n

SALC teaching assistant and Kyushu University graduate student Augusto ran a study group about economics. During these sessions, students learned how economies function. Augusto also spoke about how some economies have been able to upgrade their status while others have failed.<\/p>\n

Pop Culture: Should We Study It? – Rafael<\/strong><\/p>\n

SALC teaching assistant and Kyushu University graduate student Rafael took charge of a study group called “Pop Culture: Should We Study It?”<\/p>\n

Multiculturalism – Hiro<\/strong><\/p>\n

SALC technical staff led a study group that focused on multiculturalism. In this study group, students spoke about topics such as cultural assimilation, minority groups, and ethnic issues in Japan.<\/p>\n
