Books and magazines

bookSome people prefer to learn a language by reading on their own. It’s a great way to broaden your vocabulary and prepare you for writing. Learning how to write from a guidebook is one valid method, but it’s also important to experience real examples of well-crafted prose. In our center, a selection of world-famous novels is waiting to take your breath away. We also have popular science books, and even cookbooks!

bookOf course, we also have plenty of books for studying. Whether you’re interested in educational materials for specific tests, conversation guides or handbooks of academic English, you will find something to catch your eye and spark your interest. All books can now be borrowed for 2 weeks and this period can be further extended by another 2 weeks, if necessary. Feel free to ask the staff about our library.

bookSALC also subscribes to the International New York Times and Japan Times, as well as the weekly Time Magazine. By browsing these publications you can learn about issues and events not discussed in Japanese media, or gain a different perspective on topics already talked about. If you are interested in an article but it seems intimidating, first try reading about the same topic in your native language. This way you can become familiar with the problem and predict the kind of vocabulary you will encounter. The staff can help you, too! The newspapers also include stimulating word puzzles. They can be challenging, but it’s very satisfying when you can actually solve one. You can take old issues with you and read them in the comfort of your own home.
