Previous Games and Educational Activities

SALC often holds games and interactive activities. These events give students the chance to practice English and make friends while having fun. SALC Philosophy Café – YOUNG DANIEL(Academic Researcher)

On November 15th, the Philosophy Café, held at SALC, hosted an exceptional evening of intellectual engagement and philosophical discourse. Led by the enthusiastic scholar Daniel Young, an academic researcher, the event explored the profound depths of philosophy, seeking to answer the intricate question: ‘What is Philosophy?'”

 

 

 

  1. Thought Experiments: The session opened with imaginative scenarios that challenged conventional thinking and encouraged attendees to view philosophical concepts from fresh perspectives.

 

  1. Aesthetic Exploration: Deliberations on what constitutes beauty and how it is perceived, including references to historical and contemporary examples.

 

  1. Ontology and the Ontology Gap: A deep dive into the nature of being and the differences between perceived reality and actual existence.
  2. Phenomenology: An exploration of the structures of experience and consciousness, as explained by Edmund Husserl, emphasizing the importance of intentionality and existential phenomenology.
  3. Philosophical Inquiry Categories: The session covered various branches of philosophical inquiry, such as Ethics, Metaphysics, and Phenomenology, providing a broad overview of the field.
  4. Philosophy and Wonder: Inspired by Plato’s quote, “Philosophy begins in wonder,” the session emphasized fundamental questioning as a core aspect of philosophical inquiry.
  5. Engaging Activities: The session included a unique “Thought Experiment” involving the taste of KitKat, which served as a practical example to discuss perception, reality, and subjectivity.
  6. Interactive Discussions: Attendees actively engaged in discussions, contemplating questions like “What is time?”, “What makes an action right or wrong?”, and “How can we know there is anything outside of our minds?”

Success and Impact

The Philosophy Café proved to be a great success, attracting a diverse group of participants who were enthusiastic about exploring philosophical inquiries. The interactive format created a vibrant atmosphere in which ideas flowed freely, and diverse perspectives were embraced. Daniel Young, an academic researcher, brought his expertise and engaging presentation style to the table, making intricate subjects easily understandable and sparking profound thought and discussion among the attendees.

 

 

 

SALC Philosophy Café – YOUNG DANIEL(SALC Staff)

SALC Staff YOUNG DANIEL organises the event on 20 May 2022. The objective of this event is to promote philosophy in a non-academic way. During the session, the speaker introduced some basic concepts of philosophy and explained how they matter to all of us. The speaker started the session *with the question of the meaning of life*. The speaker went on to explain some concepts from the classic philosophical work Being and Time, written by the German philosopher Heidegger. These include Dasein (there-being), and why death is a must for Dasein. The total number of participants was 12 students. After the lecture, there was a small Q&A session with the students.

 

Craft Events

Learning language through art! SALC has held a series of craft events. SALC staff have organized general craft tables, as well as Halloween and Christmas-themed activities. The aim of these activities was to give students the chance to practice English in a relaxed setting. Check-out the posters below for more information about past events. These activities gave students the chance to practice English while testing their general knowledge.
