EducationSupervision Policy
This page outlines the laboratory’s supervision policy. The laboratory emphasizes student initiative and intellectual independence, encouraging students and early-career researchers to develop their own research questions and pursue them through active engagement in research. While guidance and support are provided, students are expected to think critically, make responsible decisions, and grow as independent researchers. The laboratory values mutual respect, research integrity, and an environment in which diverse students can pursue challenging research with confidence.
Developing Research Questions
The laboratory places strong emphasis on students identifying research questions as independently as possible. The essence of research lies in discerning the boundary between what is known and what remains unknown, and in formulating new, testable questions. We encourage students to begin from intellectual curiosity and to pursue work that advances knowledge.
Rather than starting from constraints or available tools, we encourage a goal-oriented approach: clarifying the purpose first and then selecting appropriate methods. We believe this mindset is a foundation for originality.
Autonomy and Balance
Autonomy, integrity, and sound judgment are central qualities for a developing researcher. Students are expected to think for themselves, take initiative, and actively seek solutions when challenges arise.
As a supervisor, I provide strong support, but I do not encourage either excessive dependency or isolated self-reliance. Growth comes from balancing independent effort with openness to feedback: taking ownership while receiving guidance with humility.
Research Environment and Respect
The laboratory is built on mutual respect and sincere communication. Harassment of any kind is not tolerated. We aim to provide an environment in which students and early-career researchers with diverse backgrounds can pursue challenging work with confidence.
Career Development
For students pursuing research careers, we provide practical support beyond day-to-day supervision, including guidance on academic job searches, application materials, and interview preparation. The goal is to help students become independent researchers who can navigate competitive environments.
At the same time, career decisions ultimately belong to the individual. Students are expected to gather information proactively and to act with responsibility for their choices.
