Profile

Reimi Makino works as a physical therapist while pursuing doctoral research into the neurophysiological effects of movement, breathing, chewing, and sleep on the mind and body. She focuses particularly on the gut-brain axis, which describes the interaction between the gut and the brain, and investigates the systemic physiological changes brought about by physical interventions and lifestyle habits. The core of her research is to quantify how rhythmic exercise and proper chewing promote serotonin activity and how this, in turn, affects brainwave dynamics (EEG) and sleep quality. In the future, she aims to establish a comprehensive well-being approach that integrates not only effective exercise programs but also dietary strategies that help regulate the gut environment and support serotonin secretion. Through this research, she hopes to contribute to a society in which people can optimize their mental health through the everyday activities of moving, eating, and sleeping.
